Agnes Ann Capstick
Agnes Ann Capstick, daughter of John and Agnes Capstick, was born at Throstle Hall, Dent, North Yorkshire, in 1865. Before marriage, she carried on business in Main Street, Dent, as a bakeress, and her confectionery had a wide reputation. During these early years, she gave birth to three children, including my Grandmother, Dora. No record of their father appears on any documentation and remains a mystery.

In 1909, Agnes Ann married James Bentham of Bridge End, Dent, a widower with three children. She died at Nun House, Dent, in 1943 and was buried at the local church, St Andrew's.

Little is known of the fate of Thomas Staveley Capstick. It would appear he moved to Skipton as a signalman for the railway. He had a son, Harold, and possibly a daughter, Marjorie.

This photograph was in the possession of Amy Bessie's son, Jim Bentham, until his death early in 2000. He was not sure of the people shown. However, the lady bottom right has a close resemblance to a later photograph of Agnes Ann. Another Capstick / Bentham mystery

Benthams of Dent
Agnes Ann's husband James was born in 1861 at Bridge End, Dent, to Thomas and Jane Bentham. His brothers and sisters were Alice, Thomas, John, Betty, William, Robert, and Margaret. In 1882 he married Margaret Mason and had three children, William, Jane, and Margaret. It would appear that his first wife died during, or soon after, this last daughter's birth, and he later married Agnes Ann in 1909. James' son William served in the West Riding Duke of Wellington's Regiment during World War I and was reported missing in action 16.10.1916.

A further connection to the Bentham family was made in 1921 when Agnes Ann's daughter, Amy Bessie, married John William (Jackie) Bentham. They had two sons, James and John Richard.

.
John Capstick
Agnes Ann's father is also a mystery figure. Born in 1824, possibly at Mill Beck, Dent, his mother was Jane Capstick, and his father reputedly William Bainbridge, of whom nothing has so far been discovered. John married Agnes Harper in 1852 at the Parochial Chapel, Dent. Census records locate John at Laning, Dent, in 1861 and finally at Throstle Hall in 1871. It appears they had three other daughters, Jane, Dorothy, and Betsy. What became of John, his wife and these daughters has yet to be established. However, when she died in 1943, Agnes Ann was the last survivor of John Capstick and his family.
